Microbiology Laboratory at King's college Hospital
There is no on-site Microbiology laboratory at King’s College Hospital (Denmark Hill). Blood culture diagnostics are supported locally using the BD Bactec FX system, with analysers based within the Blood Sciences laboratories and operated by Blood Sciences staff. This enables rapid incubation and initial detection of significant bacterial and fungal pathogens.
Additional local testing includes BD Bactec sterility testing of granulocyte and stem cell products, undertaken by Blood Sciences staff in support of high-risk haematology and transplant services.
All further microbiology investigations, including organism identification, susceptibility testing and specialist analyses, are performed by the central Infection Sciences service, ensuring access to comprehensive diagnostics, specialist interpretation and standardised workflows across the network.
